EDUCATIONAL EVALUATIONS
Educational evaluations are empowering. They help parents understand how their child learns. They help students understand why certain aspects of school come easy and what can be done to strengthen areas of challenge.
Specifically, educational evaluations:
Establish academic levels, track progress and clarify learning styles
Identify characteristics often associated with a learning disability in reading (dyslexia), writing (dysgraphia) and math (sometimes referred to as dyscalculia)
Explore the underlying skills needed to read fluently and for reading comprehension
Dissect the writing process from forming letters on the page and spelling words to writing paragraphs
Delve into number sense, math calculations, math fact retrieval and math reasoning (word problems)
Inform recommendations for specific academic interventions and classroom/test accommodations
INTERDISCIPLINARY PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL EVALUATIONS
In addition to doing educational testing on my own, I collaborate regularly with outstanding psychologists to provide interdisciplinary psychoeducational evaluations when there are broader questions related to cognition, attention and/or social and emotional well-being. Both cognitive and academic testing are needed to confirm a specific learning disorder diagnosis and to help establish the need for academic accommodations.
TESTING MEASURES
I use standardized measures to assess achievement in reading (accuracy, fluency and comprehension), writing (handwriting, grammar, spelling, organization of ideas and overall development of written thoughts), and math (calculation, fluency and applied skills). In addition, I assess a range of processing skills, such as phonological processing which impacts reading.
Sample of standardized measures:
Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing, Second Edition (CTOPP-2)
Gray Oral Reading Test, Fifth Edition (GORT-5)
Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement, Third Edition (KTEA-3)
Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, Fourth Edition (WIAT-IV)
Woodcock Johnson Tests of Achievement, Fourth Edition (WJ IV Ach)
